The host federation in Congo-Brazzaville was forced to reschedule due to the poor state of the facility

Following instructions from global amateur boxing body AIBA, the Africa Boxing Championships have been delayed by two weeks as improvement of the facilities at the venue of the competition go on.

African Confederation Boxing Championships' (AFBC) Elite Championships for both men and women was due to roll off this weekend in Congo-Brazzaville with the national boxing team, The Bombers, expected fly out Friday.

But communication from AFBC to Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) indicates that the event has been postponed to July 17.

UBF publicity secretary Fred Kavuma confirmed the delay saying the host federation in Congo-Brazzaville was forced to reschedule due to the poor state of the facility.

"AIBA inspected the proposed venue of the championship on Sunday and asked the host federation to put somethings right before the championship can continue. That's the communication we have from AFBC," Kavuma said.

Hesaid that despite the delay, The Bombers who went on to train yesterday, will continue to camp at the NCS hostels in Lugogo.

The postponement could be a blessing to The Bombers, half of whom are nursing different injuries and needed time to fully recover if they should be competitive.

UBF has been battling to prepare a full squad for the championships and according to Kavuma, they were due to agree on how to sustain the boxers in the camp at Lugogo.

The championship is also a qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
