KAMPALA - Maroons FC were crowned FUFA Big League Champions after two first-half goals helped them past Masavu FC at the Phillip Omondi Stadium on Sunday.

After a good start but missing three clear-cut chances at goal, the Prisons side fell behind when Joseph Nkabirwa put Masavu ahead 20 minutes into the opening half.

But Maroons were not shaken and pressed on, Patrick Kaddu netting the leveler with a fierce header from a well delivered cross by Godwin Kitagenda three minutes to half time.

Two minutes later, Kitagenda was again provider as he fed in Solomon Walusimbi who volleyed Maroons into the lead to give Maroons the edge going into the break.

In the second half both sides had chances to find the back of the net but it was a case of profligacy.

Masavu had a goal disallowed in the 71st minute after their player was ruled offside. Eventually, Maroons held on to secure victory and the title.

Maroons coach Asaph Mwebaze Jr hailed the hard work of his team to regain promotion to the Uganda Premier League as well as lift the FUFA Big League trophy.

"We will now work to strengthen our team and most importantly keep our players for a longer stay in the Premier League," he said.

Mwebaze was awarded the most valuable coach of the Big League and Patrick Kaddu took the golden boot, having emerged top scorer with 16 goals.

Maroons, Masavu and Mbarara City FC have all gained promotion to the Azam Uganda Premier league.

Mbarara City saw off Synergy 2-1 in the playoff earlier on Sunday to ensure they will be part of top flight football next season.
