The Kampala Capital City Authority has launched a door-to-door heath inspection aimed at sensitizing communities on proper home sanitation.

Health assistants will move to different areas, identifying people's needs concerning hygiene, especially areas that do not have toilet facilities.

According to the KCCA spokesperson, Peter Kaujju, the move is aimed at ending poor sanitation characterized by people using polythene bags as toilets and throwing them in drainage channels or garbage bins.

Kaujju said KCCA got a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with the Department for International Development (DfID) to KCCA to carry out a census of the number of latrines in the city.

Recently, during meeting organized by KCCA in Bukoto Parish in Nakawa division, Allan Nkurunziza, the sanitation manager at KCCA, said about 200 health assistants have been deployed in different divisions of the city. He said the project, expected to cost sh100m, will last three years.

He added that only 35% of people in Kampala have water-borne toilets. The rest of the city dwellers use pit latrines. However, most of these people don't k know what to do when the latrines get full.
