Police in Hoima is holding a mother for allegedly killing her three-week-old baby after the men she thought were the rightful fathers rejected it.

Albertine Region Police spokesperson, Allan Julius Hakiza, while addressing the media at the regional Police headquarters in Hoima town on Monday, identified the suspect as 18-yr-old Scovia Asiimwe, a resident of Muhwiju village in Buhimba sub-county, Hoima district.

Asiimwe who gave birth on January 14th allegedly took the baby boy to two of her boyfriends who denied fathering the baby.

Hakiza said the suspect after failing to decide on whom to give the baby, went to Kyakirube village in Bugambe sub-county where she killed and buried the baby.

Asiimwe is alleged to have committed the offence on February 8th.

Hakiza said she was arrested by the area LC1 leaders after they became suspicious about the disappearance of the baby.

"The suspect confessed to having given the baby rat poison that killed it," Hakiza added.

He said the mother told Police during interrogation that she later buried it on the same plot of land.

"The baby was the second born and she had given birth before by someone who also denied the kid. And according to her the first child was a problem and feared this one could also be a problem to her since it is fatherless," Hakiza said.

By press time Police was heading to the scene of crime but Hakiza said they could not retrieve the body until they secured a court order giving them a go ahead.

He said the suspect will soon appear in court to answer charges of murder.
