Kenneth Akena was fatally shot over the weekend in Lugogo

The Democratic Party (DP) has called upon Government and Parliament to implement tough laws to govern the possession of firearms especially among civilians.

The call was made in regard to the tragic incident that happened over the weekend at Forest Mall, Lugogo in Kampala that led to the death of Kenneth Akena, a community development officer.

Akena was allegedly shot by city businessman Matthew Kanyamunyu after reportedly scratching his parked car.

The deceased was allegedly reversing his car in the parking lot after he had withdrawn money from the ATM, when he accidentally knocked Kanyamunyu's car. He was shot in the stomach when he got out of his car to apologize for the incident.

"As a party we are greatly touched by the impunity in the country, we have noted with great disappointment as this has been going on for a long a time.

There are people who have guns and firearms just because they are connected to those in power and the manner in which they use these firearms has put the lives of many Ugandans at risk" said Kenneth Paul Kakande, the party's publicity secretary.

Kakande said that the government needs to swing into action before the situation deteriorates and more people start taking the law into their own hands.
