Leaders told to stimulate youth towards development

Youths blame local leaders for failing to sensitize them in a bid to improve productivity in the region.

Local leaders in Teso have been urged to take up the role of inspiring the youth in order to improve development in Uganda.

David Abala, the spokesperson of Teso parliamentary group, said leaders' failure to motivate young people has derailed their engagement in productive activities.

Abala, who doubles as the MP for Ngora County, Ngora district, said that area leaders are reluctant to sensitize youth and instead focus on criticizing them.

According to him, the youth engage in activities of gambling because they don't get convincing guidance on productivity from their leaders.

And to improve coordination between youth and local leaders, Abala suggested that leaders need to first identify the problems surrounding young people.

They should take the mantle of organizing the youth and identifying the beneficial activities that they should do other than concentrating on blaming them, he added.

Some youth admitted that they have lacked inspiration from their leaders.

They said government should organize a sensitization program of projects before any government program is launched in order to manifest the good outcomes out of the set objectives of such programs.

Young people have often been on the receiving end of criticism from various actors for spearheading acts of theft, gambling, etc - even with the existence of the youth livelihood programme.

Others have pointed the blame finger on the problem of unemployment as a cause.
