August 24, 1964, Dr. Milton Obote, then Prime Minister, announced the end of the UPC-KY Political alliance. The alliance between Uganda People's Congress (UPC) and Kabaka Yekka (KY) had been formed just before independence to defeat the Democratic Party in the pre-independence elections.
The acrimony after severing the alliance culminated into the attack on the Lubiri by Obote soldiers, forcing the Kabaka into exile in 1966.
