FDC condemns court siege by Kayihura supporters

"If everyone mobilizes his supporters to protest their trial, then where are we heading?"

KAMPALA - Ugandan opposition party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has condemned a siege by alleged supporters of Police boss Gen. Kale Kayihura in an attempt to block his trial at the Makindye Chief Magistrates Court last week.

The party's spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, said the act undermines the independence of the judiciary.

"We do not expect the Chief Justice to just come out and condemn the act. The judiciary must take a punitive action of those involved," he told reporters in Kampala on Monday.

"Kayihura, who is supposed to keep law and order, is sponsoring disorder. This must stop."

Ssemujju said the act by the purported Kayihura supporters is bad, because it can lead to mob justice.

"If everyone mobilizes his supporters to protest their trial, then where are we heading? We also have supporters and if no action is taken, other people will have to do the same.

"We want action taken on Kayihura. No one is above the law," added the FDC spokesman.

He also wondered why police could not block the rowdy group from accessing the court premises, yet they block all roads when Col. Kizza Besigye is going to court.
