The first batch of over 3000 Ugandans who were evacuated from Juba, in South Sudan on Thursday following outbreak of war that broke out last week have successfully crossed into Uganda at Nimule border on Friday afternoon.

Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Paddy Ankunda confirmed the first batch had been evacuated and that the army would go back to bring more.

"First batch of over three thousand Ugandans have been evacuated from South Sudan and have arrived safely," Ankunda said.

The army moved in to evacuate Ugandans after President Yoweri Museveni directed them. It was not yet clear how many Ugandans work and stay in South Sudan.

The number of those who have been killed or injured is also not known. Media reports indicate scores of people have reportedly been killed and thousands displaced after fighting broke out last week in Juba.

This follows a disagreement between factions loyal to South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and his Deputy Riek Machar.

The two leaders however addressed a press conference asking their factions to restrain themselves.
