KASESE - Two children perished in a fire that broke out in one of the rooms of a house in Kigoro 11 Cell in Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality early Thursday morning.

Residents told New Vision on Thursday that the fire broke out of the room soon after midnight. Police is investigating the cause of the fire.

Police and Rukoki Ward chairperson, Zabayiri Kadwanga, identified the dead children as Martin Kyandiya, 14 and 12-year-old Bernard Mumbere.

The house belongs to a prominent tomato vendor, Kahonde Abwooli, who is the mother to Kyandiya.

The residents said Police arrived at the scene after they had put out the fire and retrieving the bodies of the dead children.

Kadwanga, the Ward chairperson, said he received a phone call about the incident after midnight and immediately woke up to rush to the scene only to find the residents having retrieved the dead bodies from the room after pulling it down.

Betty Muhindo, a cousin sister to one of the deceased children [Mumbere], said that the two deceased persons had been long time friends and for the last one week, Mumbere had abandoned sleeping in their house and opted to be sleeping with his friend Kyandiya in his room.

Paul Muhindo and Bendito Aliganyira, some of the neighbors who witnessed the incident and participated in retrieving the dead bodies from the burning house, said that they heard the alarm and people crying for help soon after midnight only to find that Kyandiya and Mumbere had died inside the burning room.

Although by press time Police was still investigating to establish the cause of the fire, sources say that it could have originated from a lit candle that the deceased persons were using for lighting in the room.
