Six councilors are contesting for the position of speaker in Rukungiri district.

The swearing-in ceremony for district chairperson and district councilors has been scheduled for Friday and then after they will elect the speaker and deputy speaker.

Among those are eyeing the position of speaker include five from the ruling NRM party and one from the opposition (FDC).

The NRM candidates, who include two newcomers in the council, are: James Turyamubona, councilor Kebisoni for sub-county, Wednesday Twinomujuni from Nyakishenyi sub-county and Gideon Ntungura of Bwambara sub-county.

Others are Hellen Kabajungu, former vice chairperson and woman councilor for Ruhinda and Buhunga sub-counties and Macklean Saabiti, former finance and administration secretary who is also woman councilor for Kebisoni and Buyanja sub counties.

The only FDC candidate for the top position in Rukungiri district council is Peter Tuheirwe Bikaita, district councilor representing western division.

Female youth councillor, Phyllis Aruho of FDC, is the only candidate that has shown interest in the position of deputy speaker.
