Kawooya wins Prime General Supply Squash tournament

Michael Kawooya beat Ian Rukunya 3-2 in the final of the main draw to win the Prime General Supply Squash tournament that ended at Kampala Club at the weekend.

It was the second time in two months that the number one seed was defeating Rukunya (Seed 2) having beaten him by the same score in the Kabaka's Birthday Squash tournament last month at the same venue.

Rukunya won the first (11-4) and fourth (11-7) sets but lost in the others (11-5, 12-10, 11-9) to the three-time USPA Squash player of the year who is still hungry for more success.

"I want to remain at the top and I'm getting better and better. I want to thank my coach Derrick Banyu who has trained with me all week, and finally my hard work has paid off," Kawooya said after receiving his trophy and sh400, 000 cash from Prime General Supplies' Kifle Degefa.

"I also plan to compete in the Nakuru and Parklands Open in Kenya and I also plan to attend a training camp in the US between September and October."

In the 50-years-and-above category William Byaruhanga beat Derrick Banyu 3-0 (11/5, 11/5, 11/6) while in the Plate event final, Aggrey Nkuyahaga registered a 3-0 win over Joseph Kiwuuwa.

Upcoming player Paul Kadoma and veteran squash player Christopher Musaazi who lost at the semi-finals each walked away with sh200, 000 which was topped up by the Uganda Squash Rackets Association with sh100, 000 to each of the top four winners in the main draw.

It could be the year that finally sees squash back on its feet after USRA announced the commencement of a league that will start soon while other corporate sponsored tournaments are also lined up during the year.
