National Netball League: Police coach sure of a win

Metro is scheduled to compete in the lower division against teams among others Posta, Blue Star, Maroons, TLC, Kampala University and Kawempe as action throws off on May 21 at Namboole.

Police netball team coach, Fred Mugerwa believes his junior side, Police Metro is capable of winning their inaugural accolade in the local league history following the launch of the lower division starting this season.

Metro is scheduled to compete in the lower division against teams among others Posta, Blue Star, Maroons, TLC, Kampala University and Kawempe as action throws off on May 21 at Namboole.

This follows a decision by the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) to divide the league into two divisions where the top six finalists in the previous season including champions Prisons, NIC, UPDF, UCU, Police and KCCA will be battling in the first division.

"The senior team has been there for years but have not won any title due to the level of competition but I am sure we could easily win the lower division trophy with the nature of competition expected," Mugerwa said.

He added: "This strategy is good because it will give weaker teams a chance to play amongst each other and maybe with time, their players will gain the confidence and courage to play stronger teams".

At the end of the inaugural season, UNF will promote the top two teams from the lower division to play in the first division but no team from the top division will be relegated.

"The intension of not relegating any team in the first division this season is to make sure their eight teams in that group next season increase the level of competition," Mugerwa said adding that teams will also play a home and away format for both divisions.
