FDC demands for an independent audit for the election results

We plan to engage as many people as possible to ensure that the system respects the rule of law. There is already too much demand for change in this country and we are committed to change the system

After failing to meet the deadline to petition court over the election results, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have turned their guns to "systematic  pursuit of justice" by outlining three demands to Government.

Briefing the media on the party's way forward to resolve the current disagreement, FDC president Gen. Mugisha Muntu, demanded for an independent audit of the election results, immediate withdraw of police and other security agencies from the residence of the party's candidate Kizza Besigye's home, the party headquarters in Najanankumbi and immediate release of all arrested party supporters.

To achieve the demands, Muntu said the party plans to involve the civil society, religious leaders, and the International community and actively engage the population to demand for change of the system and restore the rule of law.

"We plan to engage as many people as possible to ensure that the system respects the rule of law. There is already too much demand for change in this country and we are committed to change the system. This will be done through systematic pursuit of our constitutional rights," Muntu said.

Without explaining the details of whether the party had tallied their own election results, Muntu said, "the loser was declared a winner."

"This is why we need an independent audit. The results declared did not tally with what we had. There were glaring irregularities. This time, they forgot to wear gloves and finger prints are all over the place," he said.

Muntu's statement comes in the wake of the party's failure to petition court within the required 10 days after the electoral commission announced results.

President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM party candidate was declared winner with 60.6% of the vote after defeating seven other candidates. FDC candidate Besigye came second with 35.6%.

Basigye promised to challenge the results, but failed to meet the deadline. After the declaration of result two weeks ago, Besigye has been arrested and detained in various Police stations as well as at his home in Kasangati.
