According to preliminary investigations, the tyre that burst might have resulted into the fire outbreak on the bus

Police have launched investigations into the cause of a fire that gutted a Gaaga bus at Matuga in Wakiso district.

The police deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye confirmed on Tuesday evening that, "at about 3:10pm, a bus belonging to Gaaga coaches registration number UAP 759H heading to Paidha district from Kampala burst a tyre at Matuga."

She said that according to preliminary investigations, the tyre that burst might have resulted into the fire outbreak on the bus.

She added that, "the driver of the bus identified as John Kiyonga tried to put out the fire using onboard fire extinguishers but failed."

Namaye also confirmed that although the bus was burnt beyond recognition, all passengers got out of the bus with no injuries sustained, no property lost and no deaths registered.

Namaye said that technical personal at the scene attributed the flat tyre to faulty brakes and friction.

She said two unidentified men were arrested as they tried to cause chaos with an intention of stealing from the accident victims.

"These men started throwing stones at the passengers and injured two of them. We arrested them and police put the situation under control," Namaya explained.

The Gaaga coaches' manager Robert Remo also attributed the fire to the tyre, adding that the bus fire extinguishers failed to stop the blaze.
