Kutesa back at Foreign Affairs, visits Washington

Sam Kutesa has resumed his responsibilities as Minister of Foreign Affairs with a two-day visit to the United States capital, Washington, DC. Kutesa was President of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly until September 14, 2015.

SAM Kutesa has resumed his responsibilities as Minister of Foreign Affairs with a two-day visit to the United States capital, Washington, DC. Kutesa was President of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly until September 14, 2015.
On this two-day visit, he was on a mission to foster and strengthen relations and interaction between Uganda and the United States.
During the visit, he held meetings with several members of Congress and discussed several issues of interest in the bilateral relations between Uganda and the United States, including regional peace and security in the Great Lakes region and Somalia.
Members of Congress and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence commended Uganda for its efforts towards finding lasting peace in the region, especially in Somalia and South Sudan. They undertook to continue supporting all peace efforts in the region, noting the importance of peace in supporting development and getting people out of poverty.
When Kutesa was voted United Nations General Assembly president, he became the first Ugandan to take the leadershipof the 193-member world body. Kutesa, a veteran politician, seasoned lawyer and businessman, was the 12th African to assume the prestigious office.
On his visit this week, Kutesa also held a moderated discussion at the Atlantic Council of the United States, where he shared information and views on the important work of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and peace and security issues in Africa.
Some of the participants included Johnnie Carson, Senior Adviser to President Obama; Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Department of State, Ms. Amanda Dory, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence, and Mr. Carter Ham, Former AFRICOM Commander.

Butterfield from North Dakota, and Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus; Representative Gregory Meeks of New York; Representative Christopher Smith of New Jersey, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organisations; Representative Karen Bass of California, and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Human Rights and International Organisations; and Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Global Health Policy. He also met Ms. Amanda Dory, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for African Affairs.
