President Yoweri Museveni is the most influential African leader on the social media platform Twitter, according to statistics released by Twiplomacy Study 2014.
Worldwide he is number 20, while the Pope comes first. According to online records. Museveni’s personal Twitter account @KagutaMuseveni, was registered on March 27, 2010 but he only sent his first tweet on April 24, this year after the account had been verified.
The account tweets on rare occasions of mainly personal observations and greetings to followers as well as posts and pictures of the President’s activities.
His very first tweet showed him driving an ethanol-powered car from Kyambogo University. This is his most re-tweeted tweet so far.
According to Twiplomacy, Pope Francis is the most influential world leader, followed by Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro and US President Barack Obama.
The top 10 most influential leaders also include Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister. The President’s tweet analysis by Twiplomacy shows that as of June 2014, he had 16 tweets and he was following one person, but with 39,491 followers, with a 100% record of having his tweets re-tweeted.
Museveni is followed by 22 world leaders. Sarah Kagingo, the special presidential assistant for communication, said the President ranked high because his tweets although still few, have been shared out massively.
The second-ranked African leader in influence is South African President Jacob Zuma, who is in 45th position. The most followed leader in Africa is former Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi.
