The Government should pay for higher education and leave parents to meet the cost of their children’s primary and secondary school education, the Zombo LC5 chairperson, Emmy Kizito Kakura, has suggested.

Kizito said although the Government introduced universal primary and secondary education progammes to improve and make education more accessible, many parents have given up on their role in educating children.

“Parents in my district could afford to educate their children by engaging in more productive ventures such as commercial agriculture,” Kakura told New Vision recently.

He noted that Zombo performs poorly in terms of education because of the dismal support from parents, most of whom, he said, engage in wasteful activities like drinking and gambling.

“I suggest that the Government supports education at A’level, tertiary institutions and universities only so that parents are tasked to pay their children’s fees at lower levels since higher education is too expensive for most parents,” Kakura said.

The district boss also applauded religious institutions for establishing schools and health facilities in the district to improve the living standards of the rural communities.
