The fashion industry in Uganda is fast growing with plenty of shows, schools and fashion houses springing up every day.

Interesting enough, most of the graduates from the fashion schools are male. There is also a significant rise in the number of men who attend fashion shows in the country.

Either they (men) have started embracing style or fashion or it could be that they are just accompanying their ladies to the shows. Your guess is as good as mine. Here is what the men I caught with had to say:

Kenneth Ssebalijja, Doctor: I go to socialise, and also to unwind from the weeks work load. I will not pretend about it. I enjoy underwear or bikini wear. If I went to a fashion show and they was nothing like that, to me it wouldn’t be a complete show. I would feel cheated. You see I am a guy I appreciate beautiful things. When a model steps on the runway wearing one of the underwear showcased, then I envision my girlfriend wearing one like that.

Henry Sekanjako, journalist: I appreciate fashion. I just do not want to be left out.

Allan Bwambale, a Fine artist:
I am an artist. I go to see what new creative designs are on. I do appreciate the lingerie. I believe the body communicates more. In art there is this saying less means more. Designers who use less fabric most times communicate more effectively than those who use meters of fabric.

John Okello, graphics designer: I do appreciate the lingerie. Its food for my eyes, and to me, it completes the fashion show.
