The Attorney General, Peter Nyombi, has said President Yoweri Museveni is “satisfied” with his “controversial” legal opinions

KAMPALA - The Attorney General, Peter Nyombi, has said President Yoweri Museveni and the Government are “satisfied” with his “controversial” legal opinions, which in most cases have drawn mixed reactions within the public realm.

Defending four legal opinions that forced the Uganda Law Society (ULS) to suspend him, Nyombi said he addressed them to the President and he did not find them “shallow” and wanting.

“I did address most of my legal opinions to the President. I know the President to be intelligent. If anyone attempted to give him a shallow legal opinion, he would challenge you.

“As you are aware, Cabinet came out with a strong statement that the Government was satisfied with my advice.”

Nyombi addressed journalists at the Attorney General’s (AG) chambers in Kampala on his recent court victory over what he described as “an obnoxious” decision by ULS to suspend him from the organisation.

In a meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala in August last year, over 400 lawyers cited four controversial legal opinions for suspending Nyombi.

However, on Monday, Justice Stephen Musota ruled in Nyombi’s favour, saying ULS members had no legal authority to suspend Nyombi and that their actions bordered on an illegality.

The AG said: “I do write some controversial opinions and I do stand by those legal opinions because I write them after carrying out a thorough research.

“It is madness for ULS to try to banish the author of a legal opinion because they have a contrary opinion.”
