Major General Mugisha Muntu is the new FDC president after trouncing his arch-rival Nandala Mafabi in a hotly contested race.

Muntu garnered 393 votes against Nandala’s 361 while Ekanya settled for 17 votes.

Celebrations for Muntu's victory has kicked off. The elections were held at Mandela National Stadium at Namboole.

Muntu is now set to take up the mantle from Dr. Kizza Besigye who has lost thrice to President Yoweri Museveni in national elections.

Speaking during at delegates’ conference, party secretary general, Alice Alaso, said most of the foreign funders had stopped funding the party activities.

“We therefore do not have enough money to fund the various party activities. That’s why we advertised for the positions of the party accountant and chief administrator but we do have the money to pay them. I request you delegates to locally raise money to run your district offices,” she lamented.

The party’s Electoral Chairperson, Dan Mugarura, said they were even unable to organize grassroots elections ahead of the delegates’ conference as earlier planned because they failed to raise the funds.

“So many of our would be funders feared to contribute money to the party because they do not want NRM government to know that they are supporting us,” Mugarura added.
