As Diocesan Secretary, I had to brief Bishop Patrick Kyaligonza about the diocese activities everyday. I vividly recall his first words to me when he became Bishop. “Namesake, we need the Holy Spirit to always guide us. The diocese looks upon me to lead it rightfully and I will rely on God’s guidance plus your help.”

Apart from the title ‘Bishop’, Kyaligonza never changed his old self — the humble priest.

As one of the senior staff, I am at a loss. The singer Jim Reeves, in one of his songs, asked: “From here, what next?”

The late Bishop had drawn great plans for the diocese namely, the upgrading of Kabarole Hospital to an ultra-modern one.

Kyaligonza also had plans for our schools, because many of them had suffered neglect as far as infrastructure is concerned. On the academic part, Kyaligonza wanted schools restored to their former glory.

He wanted all church land surveyed and title deeds secured. One of his most ambitious plans was to plant one million trees by the end of this year because he believed in saving the environment and making the diocese harvest lots of money in 30 or 40 years, when he would no longer be the Bishop.

Kyaligonza had also worked on a new deployment plan for the clergy and diocesan staff who die before celebrating the Diocesan Golden Jubilee which was to be in November.

He leaves this world before the establishment of Archbishop Eric Sabiiti Diocesan Centre and the construction of the conference centre among the many programmes he had for the diocese.

About my Bishop, fellow ministers and friends, I can say he was as a shepherd is to his calling.

He never believed in punishment, but correction, he never got cross with his junior clergy or laity. He was never emotional in the way in which he handled problems.

Kyaligonza loved his family and advised priests to always spare some time for their families.

I can say the Rt Rev Patrick Kyaligonza Ateenyi will be missed by all.
