EDITOR—Following the heartbreaking news of the Bududa tragedy, the media has as usual unearthed the untold story about Bududa that must in part be responsible for one of Uganda’s worst tragedies in recent times. It points at nothing more than population explosion.

The revelation of poor peasants or teachers having two wives, with a minimum of 10 children and in some cases, as many as 20 is shocking when the cost of living in the country is increasing daily. Uganda continues to have an unacceptable population policy that glories in rapid population growth without considering the capacity at household levels to guarantee decent welfare for the children that are being born.

No wonder therefore, that incidents like that in Bududa are actually happening. It is the same story though at a smaller scale, in other parts of Uganda like Kisoro, Kabale and Bundibugyo that have dense population.
