Dairy traders get regional market skills

DAIRY Development Authority has equipped traders with business skills and quality control to tap into the regional market.
The week-long training, at the Entebbe Dairy Training School was conducted in partnership with the East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD), SNV-Netherlands and Uganda Dairy Traders Association (UNDATA).
Khalidi Kalema, the UNDATA secretary general, explained during the pass-out of 25 milk traders over the weekend that the emphasis was on penetrating the bigger regional market.
“Regional market is challenging and it calls for better quality if we are to access and sustain it.
“Quality control begins from farmers to traders through whom over 80% of locally produced milk is channeled,†said Kalema.
Dr. David Balikowa, a senior business adviser at EADD, said promotion of quality and safe milk for the local consumers and the regional market would boost the dairy industry.
He said increased milk production would assist the country in sustaining the competitive regional market.
“Dairy traders play an important role in the milk industry as the few milk processing companies can only use about 20% of the locally produced milk,†said Balikowa.
