THE national women’s team at the 39th World Chess Olympiad registered their biggest win in Russia on Thursday.

The team outwitted Ethiopia 4-0 in the ninth round of the world’s premier chess show to pull off their second win.

Ivy Amoko, playing on board one started the rout with a win over Zeleke Menasse before Phiona Mutesi, the youngest on the team, registered her first win over Abera Haregeweyn.

This is the first time that Uganda is fielding a women’s team at the Olympiad.

In the other games, Grace Kigeni beat Abera Betelhem while Joan Butindo silenced Tulu Legesse.

Uganda had earlier defeated Japan by 2 and half points.

Victory over Ethiopia pushed Uganda to 13.5 points after nine rounds of play.

There are two more rounds to complete the competition.

Uganda also has a men’s that beat Sao Tome and Principe and now has 17.5 points from nine rounds.
