Uganda gets sh566b for HIV

THE US Government has donated $25m (sh566b) for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention under the Presidential Emergency Programme for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

THE US Government has donated $25m (sh566b) for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention under the Presidential Emergency Programme for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The five-year funding is coordinated through the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
The money was handed over on Thursday by the US Embassy Charge d’Affaires, Virginia Blaser at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
At least 770,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and those affected will benefit from the donation, according to the United States Agency for International Development.
The beneficiaries include 10 Kampala City Council clinics where people living with HIV/AIDS will get anti-retroviral therapy and other services. Mulago, Butabika, Mbarara teaching hospitals and other public health facilities in Mbarara will also benefit from the donation.
Others are the African Medical Research Foundation for its HIV prevention work that includes safe medical male circumcision in Apac, Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Luwero, Mubende, Mityana, Wakiso and Kalangala districts.
The National Transfusion Services, which screens and ensures safety of donated blood, will also receive funds.
The Programme for Accessible Health Communication and Education, which provides basic HIV care services including condoms, drugs, insecticide-treated mosquito nets and literature on HIV prevention will also benefit.
Baylor College of Medicine will get two grants. One of them will be used to provide HIV/AIDS support services for adults and children in various districts including Jinja, Tororo, Manafwa, Bukedea, Kumi, Ngora, Soroti and Serere.
The college will also implement the national human resource health plan, which includes recruiting more health workers, in-service refresher training, support and retention of trained health workers in the labour force.
Mildmay, which provides health services for people living with HIV/AIDS in 13 districts in the central region, will also get part of the funds.
