REX Stevens, a United Kingdom trainer from the Youth Sport Trust (YST) based at Loughborough University has applauded UCA for its strategy to develop women cricket.
Rex is in Uganda for a five-day young leaders course as part of the British Council (BC) Dreams and Teams initiative.
He told the press yesterday that YST’s objective is to develop young leaders through sports.
Twenty-three girls from ten secondary schools are assembled at Lugogo for the second BC sponsored residential academy.
The BC, in partnership with Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), launched a women cricket development programme in 2001 under the Dreams and Teams project.
“Our target is to help the girl child acquire leadership skills through sports and we are happy UCA are partners in the struggle,” BC’s Kate Ewart said.
Project coordinator Suzan Luswata said the project aims at increasing girls’ cricket playing schools in Uganda.
Six secondary schools participated in the first girls cricket week last December.
