THE chairperson of the disciplinary committee of the Law Council, Elijah Wante, has decried the increasing failure by lawyers to account for clients’ money.
Wante said the biggest complaint the committee had registered related to financial impropriety.
Wante, who is also the Director of the Law Development Centre, was addressing lawyers in Western Uganda at a one-day regional workshop at Rwizi Arch Hotel in Mbarara on Saturday
He urged advocates with chambers to always have proper bookkeeping and explain to their clients the costs involved in handling cases.
He told them to separate personal, office, and clients’ books of accounts.
“I recommend that you hire a client’s clerk to manage the books so that you don’t get into those problems,†Wante said.
Wante also criticised upcountry lawyers over the poor state of their chambers.
