The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) on Sunday saved two students of Lwala Girls School who were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in Teso sub-county in Kaberamaido district in June.

Second Lt. Chris Magezi, the UPDF spokesman for the 5th Division, yesterday said the army rescued the students after a brief confrontation with a group of about 30 to 40 LRA rebels at Agelec River in Omoro sub-county, Moroto county, northeast of Lira district.

Magezi said the two students were with six other captives who were rescued in the same battle in which 46 abductees were rescued from various areas on Sunday.

He said they also rescued 26 abductees including six from Agelec and others from Omot in Agago county in Pader.

He said 20 others were rescued by the 51st battalion in Padibe in Kitgum during another brief encounter with another group of rebels.

Magezi said it brought the number of abductees so far rescued to 103 in one week.

The northern army spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, yesterday said the army killed one.
