Parliament has again rejected the appointment of Margaret Mbeiza as state minister for economic monitoring.

Members of the parliamentary appointments committee opposed her appointment on ‘moral grounds.’

Sources that attended the stormy meeting said the MPs rejected her nomination despite reports by the Speaker, Edward SSekandi, that she had been cleared by medical experts from Butabika Hospital.

“The Speaker told us that medical experts from Butabika had cleared her of mental illness.

He said Mbeiza was a woman of sound mind. But members stood their ground and said her moral character was still questionable, a source said.

Ssekandi last week told The New Vision that Parliament last month deferred Mbeiza’s appointment because “there were some issues that need to be clarified.”

“Once we get this information, Parliament will make its final decision,” he said.

Addressing journalists after appearing before the committee, Mbeiza said she was fit to serve as a minister.

“I am a Ugandan of sound mind and I ably answered their questions. I have done my part and the remaining part is for the committee to decide my fate,” she said.

According to recent media reports, Mbeiza had been admitted to hospital with a mental illness.

She has on several occasions approached President Yoweri Museveni to explain her fate.
