PRIVATE universities and higher institutions of learning have been asked to stop increasing fees in the middle of a semester or term.

Higher education state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana said institutions are not allowed to increase fees without consulting the ministry, the students and other stakeholders, especially the parents.

Rukutana said the issue of universities increasing the fees in the middle of the term had forced some students to abandon their studies, which he said was unacceptable.

He made the remarks while officiating at a thanksgiving ceremony for Ankole Western Institute of Science and Technology and Ankole Western University project in Kabwohe, Bushenyi district.

Rukutana also handed over a provisional licence certificate from the National Council for Higher Education to the institute’s chairperson of the board of directors, the Rt. Rev. Yona Katoneene. Katoneene is also the bishop of West Ankole Diocese.Private
