As Uganda joins the rest of the world in marking World No Tobacco Day tomorrow, the health ministry has warned Ugandans against using tobacco or inhaling second hand smoke.

In a press release, Dr. Dennis Lwamafa, an official from the health ministry, said tobacco was “the only legal product which kills the user.” He added that tobacco smoking kills more than 5 million people annually.

This year’s theme is “Tobacco Health Warnings” and Lwamafa says tobacco warnings that appear prominently on cigarette packets are among the strongest defences against the global tobacco epidemic.

“This year’s theme offers Uganda a unique opportunity to ensure that all cigarette packets sold in Uganda have prominent and understandable health warning,” he said.
