Has FIDA followed up these cases?

EDITOR—WBS TV recently aired the story of a 75-year-old woman who was ‘pregnant’. What troubled me was not what the reporter was emphasising —pregnancy at that advanced age, and not the cause of the pregnancy—rape! Nobody seemed too concerned about the sexual violence against a defenceless old woman.

Not too long ago a disabled blind, deaf and dumb 12-year old girl was found to be pregnant! I would like to know from the relevant authorities and special interest groups such as FIDA, what has been done to address these two incidents.

Has there been redress for the victims and retribution for the criminals? In particular the man, or more accurately the beast, responsible for the 12-year-old’s pregnancy should not go scot free. Paternity tests should be done on suspects.

As a society we have become too unconcerned about brutality, even against women and children. When I lived in the UK I often read the New Vision,/i> online but never once recommended it to my British friends.

How would I explain, in the ‘amusement’ pages, stories such as a man ‘walloping’ his wife over missing beans? The joke is supposed to be the missing beans, but the walloping would not be lost on a western and dare I say any civilised society. I also think our leaders are too abstract and theoretical. Ugandans feel important and intelligent when they talk, and mistake that for work. The result is that little gets done.

There is a furore over interpretation of section this and that of such and such a law and the whole parliament turns up to claim fat allowances. Grown men and women who can’t sort out who is an authentic official and who is not. The furore should be over real issues such as disabled or elderly women being raped, and what to do to protect them and to ensue that what is resolved to be done is actually done.

Finally, I would like to request that FIDA , women’s NGOs and any other interest groups (forget politicians) let the likes of us concerned people know how we can help or get involved in their causes. Please reply to this forum and give us your contacts.
