Gadaffi does not deserve the honour

EDITOR—Driving past Makerere University recently, I saw a new and unique signpost reading “Col. Muammar Gadaffi Road”. I call it unique because its size is not what Kampala city uses for its signposts. Besides, it is very shabby.

This may indicate that someone or group without the authority of KCC may have put up that signpost! To me, Gadaffi is another African dictator who is not worth having a road named after. If we insist on renaming this road after Gadaffi then why not also reinstate Bokassa Street?

We could also have Amin, Mobutu, Nguesso and Mugabe roads. Some Muslims might argue that Gadaffi built the Old Kampala mosque. Fair enough but let it stop there since the mosque was named after him. They should also know that the money Gadaffi donated belongs to Libyan citizens who were not consulted over the donation.

And to KCC, if this signpost was constructed without their approval then it should be removed immediately. Makerere University has had prominent lecturers and administrators this road can be named after. It is wrong to name it after a power hungry dictator.
