THE rainy season is here. Weather experts have predicted that the rains will fall between March and May. This is the time to plant, mainly seasonal crops like maize, beans, sorghum and upland rice.

Local leaders should sensitise farmers about the season and urge them to plant their crops before the rains end.

Here is how they can do it:

  • Tour your area and find out whether the farmers are aware of the season

  • Make sure each farmer has ploughed their garden. For the farmers who grow seasonal crops like maize, by now, they should have cultivated their land already in preparation for planting

  • Find out if the farmers have enough seeds for the season and if they do not, contact the district agriculture officers or the National Agricultural and Advisory Service coordinators for assistance.

  • Invite the extension workers to visit your area to advise farmers on how to plant their crops.
