AFTER Thursday’s five-wicket loss to Canada , Uganda could not have faced Ireland at a worse time.

Ebrahim Mohammed’s men need to drag their qualification bid back onto the straight and narrow after Geoff Barnet’s rebellious 102 off 123 helped Canada condemn them to their first defeat at the ICC World Cup Qualifier.

Yet Ireland could make it two successive losses for Uganda by day’s end. The Irish came into the Qualifier as favourites but after humiliating much-fancied Scotland by seven wickets and Oman by 116 runs, that tag is beginning to look a bit of an understatement.

Still, Uganda have no choice but try where Scotland and Oman miserably failed. Yet it is hard to envisage Mohammed as much as whispering surrender in a pre-match pep talk. In fact, if an Ireland victory is one of the guarantees of the clash at the Stan Friedman oval, this is the other – Uganda will fight to the last ball.

Uganda’s batting order has one or two suspect faces but the team’s resilience appears to be a reliable counterweight to such loopholes.

That said, Uganda’s batsmen have largely done well. Their innings score of 234 was enough to overwhelm Namibia on Wednesday and Canada came to within the last 12 balls of failing to overhaul Uganda’s 231.
