CHRISTIANS from Tororo Catholic Diocese on Thursday welcomed their new Archbishop, Dennis Kiwanuka Lote.
Kiwanuka, who travelled from Kotido Diocese in the company of Karimojong Christians dressed in their traditional attire, was received at Kachumbala sub-county headquarters in Bukedea district, about 20km from Mbale town.

He was then escorted in a convoy of about 100 vehicles that took close to two hours to reach Mbale town.

Tororo Diocese covers Busia, Tororo, Butaleja, Pallisa, Budaka, Manafwa, Bududa, Mbale, Sironko, Kapchorwa and Bukwo districts while the ecclesiastical province stretches from the source of the Nile to Karamoja.

In Mbale, the outgoing Archbishop, James Odongo, the clergy and scores of chanting Christians received Kiwanuka. They held a benediction (short prayer) at St. Austin Cathedral. Kiwanuka, 69, is to be installed today at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Tororo.

Born at Kadumure village, in Apopong sub-county, Pallisa district in 1938, Kiwanuka lost both parents within the first two weeks of his life on earth.

His mother, Federesi Dongo, died of a postnatal complication while his father, Timothy Mwanja, just collapsed and died barely a week after burying his wife.

Faced with the difficulties of raising an infant in a rural setting, Kiwanuka’s maternal uncle, Joseph Magino, handed him over to Kaucho Church where he grew up in the care of some nuns and church workers.

The Little Sisters of St. Francis Assisi later sponsored his education until he joined Achilet Seminary before he proceeded to Nagongera Seminary enroute to his priesthood.

He served as a priest in various areas before becoming the Vicar General of Tororo Diocese. In 1991, he was appointed Bishop of the new diocese of Kotido.

Recently, he replaced the retiring Archbishop of Tororo Diocese, James Odongo.

Kiwanuka told the congregation in Mbale that his appointment took him by surprise, and pledged to work with the clergy and laity for the development of the Christian faith in the archdiocese. “I was on leave when I was told by the secretary to the Nuncio that I had been appointed Archbishop of Tororo Diocese.”

Archbishop Emeritus James Odongo welcomed his successor. “Once you are put on the watch tower, you will see everything. Remember God’s flock is blessed with the peace that God himself gives.” Odongo said.
