ONE of cricket’s greatest batsmen Brian Lara is coming to Uganda for an eight-day tour that could inspire a new generation of local players.

Lara is expected this morning ahead of a visit that will take him around the country to interact with various cricketers and students.

“It’s probably one of the biggest things that has happened to Uganda Cricket,” said UCA publicist Latimar Mukasa with heavy understatement.

The local cricket governing body together with the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission have organised Lara’s visit and Mukasa expects Uganda cricket to reap big.

Mukasa explained: “It will also give our sponsors great confidence in the local game. It will provide a massive boost to Ugandan cricket.”

During his 20-year first class playing career which ended in 2007, he was the only batsman to have scored a hundred, a double century, a triple century, a quadruple century and a quintuple century.

“I wish our boys could learn from how he never threw his wicket away, and even when the opposition seemed easy, he took his time and built an innings rather than just smash the ball all over the place.... ,” said Andrew Chappell, a cricket pundit.

Toyata, Shell and Nile Breweries have offered separate sponsorship packages for Lara’s visit.
