ONE woman lost an arm and several people sustained serious injuries during violent clashes between Balaalo herdsmen and Alur farmers over land at Kapapi village, Kigorobya sub-county in Hoima district.

Flora Kobusinge, 30, was rushed to Hoima Hospital and the part of the arm cut off was taken to Hoima Police Station as an exhibit. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the clashes.

The incident that lasted over five hours on Monday, also left 17 grass-thatched huts burnt down, several cows and goats injured and household property destroyed.

A team of security chiefs led by the mid-western Regional Police Commander, Martin Abilu, moved to Kapapi, which is about 25km from Hoima town, to assess the situation.

Abilu told reporters that the Police had deployed in the area to prevent more clashes. He said the violence began after the Kigorobya sub-county internal security officer, only identified as John, brought surveyors to map the land which a group of Alur farmers claim belongs to them.

“The Alur who came from Buliisa district some time back brought spears and pangas and attacked the Balaalo,” Abilu said.

In December 2007, one person died and several cows were killed during clashes between the Balaalo and Alur. A Police post was later set up in Kapapi.
