A SECTION of the Bunyha chiefdom in Mayuge district has declared itself independent from Busoga Kingdom.

The hereditary cultural leader, Chief Luba Elphaz Namyosi Byansi Mukajjanga, announced that his chiefdom had become independent.

He announced this on Tuesday while meeting journalists at the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe. Bunyha is one of the 11 chiefdoms that form Busoga Kingdom.

Mukajjanga also said Bunyha would not in any way participate in the election exercise of the new Kyabazinga and will consequently not recognise the new king. Elections for the new Kyabazinga will take place on October 31, to replace Henry Muloki, who died last month.

This followed several complaints by Mukajjanga, who says he is the true Luba (Bunyha chief), but his chair was taken over by Juma Munulo, a senior council in Jinja.

He said the matter had been discussed with Muloki, the Busoga Lukiiko and the hereditary chiefs, but no lasting solution had been reached.

On September 30 2001, a letter was written to Muloki informing him about a cultural war that had emerged between Mukajjanga and Munulo over the Luba office.

Other letters were written to Munulo, confirming to him the reinstatement of Chief Luba Elphaz Byansi Mukajjanga as the hereditary cultural leader of Bunha chiefdom, but he allegedly ignored them.

Mukajjanga’s wish is to see Munulo kicked out of the chair, so that he resumes it as the true and recognised chief. Mukajjanga claims that Munulo usurped the chair as chief Luba when he asked him (Munulo) to caretake for a period of about two months; while he was undergoing eye treatment at Jinja Hospital

Clad in a white tunic and black coat, Mukajjanga unceremoniously entered a boardroom where a meeting of the 11 hereditary chiefs in Bugembe was taking place on Tuesday. Munulo also attended the meeting. But Mukajjanga was told to march out, since he was not invited.

The Issabalangira, the Wakhooli of Bukhooli, David Kaunhe, chaired the meeting. Kaunhe promised to meet the warring parties on November 15.

When ordered out, Mukajjanga, retorted: “These people seem to underlook us; they know the truth of the whole matter but they have decided to suffocate us and deal with such a weird man who is only imposing himself as the Luba of Bunyha.

“The Bunyha chiefdom royal council has unanimously approved my move to secede from Busoga Kingdom and we shall stand by that.”
