CHURCH of Uganda Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi has appointed retired Bishop William Magambo as caretaker bishop for Ankole Diocese.

The seat fell vacant following the retirement of Bishop Elisha Kyamugambi, who had served for more than 14 years. Earlier, two brothers, the Rev. Dr. Wilberforce Kamukama and Rev. Dr. Grace Karamura, had been nominated as candidates to replace Kyamugambi.

However, in December, the House of Bishops rejected the two candidates, citing irregularities in the nomination process.

Orombi also said the diocesan nomination committee would meet again to conduct fresh nominations and elect a new bishop in June.

Addressing Christians during a service in St. James Cathedral Mbarara on Sunday, Orombi said according to Church of Uganda rules, in the event that a successor is lacking, the Archbishop takes over the administration of the diocese.

Orombi explained: “The House of Bishops went through a process of trying to elect somebody who would replace Elisha, but it did not work. From today, the diocese belongs to the archbishop, meaning you have a bishop. It (the seat) is not empty.

“But being that I am in Kampala, I ask Bishop William Magambo to come here and help me. He will be a caretaker bishop.”

The service also included Kyamugambi’s official retirement. He bid farewell to the faithful. In attendance were retired Bishop Eliphaz Maari, several Church of Uganda clergymen, archdeacons and the laity.
