New headquarters for Nakaseke

Butalangu is the new headquarters of Nakaseke district. The decision was made by the High Court, after a year of uncertainty over the location of the new district headquarters.
For over 10 years, Nakaseke had been asking for separation from Luweero district. The argument was that Nakaseke, especially Ngoma is far away from Luweero, which meant that residents travelling distances for administrative services.
On the other hand, Ngoma was one of the most productive areas for Luweero, largely because of cattle keeping.
Residents of Nakaseke held several demonstrations, including carrying skulls of people who died in the 1981-86 war to get a district.
When the district was accepted, there was no office accommodation for the district officials. Syda Bbumba (right), the area Member of Parliament, mobilised temporary offices for the district at Kiwoko, as construction of the headquarters commenced at Butalangu. A sh220m complex was put up.
However, sections of the residents, including the new chairman Ignatius Koomu, opposed taking the district to Butalangu and the matter ended up in court. “If you ask me, I would say I want the district headquarters at Nakaseke because that is what parliament decided,†Koomu said
Recently, court decided against their petition.
The transfer of the headquarters to the new complex has excited residents of Ngoma. “Finally, we are going to have development here. We produce many things like milk, pay a lot of taxes but our area had lagged behind,†says Paul Kittaka a resident.
