ONE man was hacked to death in a suspected ethnic conflict over a wetland used for growing paddy rice and yams in Mbale district.
The Thursday incident at Nyanza village in Namatala swamp along the Mbale-Tirinyi road, left Mohammed Kinyowe, 30, dead, according to Taire Idwege, the eastern regional Police chief
Idwege said the deceased was decapitated with a machete. The Police said there is an ongoing row between the Bagisu and Bagwere in the area over the use of the wetland.
Idwege said that eight suspects had been arrested, but declined to disclose their identities. “A mob armed with pangas and clubs descended on Kinyowe as he was digging. The mob hacked him to pieces,†Idwege said, adding that “his head, hands and legs were severed off and carried away by the assailants.â€
It took the army and the Police four hours to calm the situation as the enraged relatives of the deceased blocked Mbale-Tirinyi highway, seeking revenge.
