DP did not fight

FORMER Democratic Party president Paul Ssemogerere has told a Kasese rally that President Museveni is lying when he says the DP did not participate in the liberation war. He said he stayed in the NRM government until he realised that Museveni was diverting from the principles that led to the war.

The claim that the DP participated in the bush war is complete fiction.

Some individuals may have assisted the NRA but the DP as an organisation was committed to parliamentary politics between 1981 and 1985 even though the 1980 elections were rigged. In fact the DP consistently made it clear that it was opposed to armed struggle.

Ssemogerere himself was a courageous man. His ‘Black Book’ helped publicise the atrocities committed by the Obote 2 regime at considerable risk to himself. But he should not try to rewrite history by claiming that the DP participated in the liberation war.
