It was the perfect setting for a romantic Valentine’s dinner. The Rwenzori Ballroom at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel was beautifully decorated to set the mood for a night of romance.

Tables were set for two and pretty arrangements of red roses adorned the table. Chair covers with maroon piping and crisp white tablecloths with red over lay, candles and a red box with white hearts added to the romance. The dance floor was strewn with red rose petals in a heart shape. Soft, romantic music played in the background.

This was the Caltex dinner in honour of 70 couples who participated in the Caltex Valentine draw and won. Entry into the draw required spending sh20,000 on fuel at a Caltex station or at the StarMart. The grand prize was a romantic valentine dinner for two at the Sheraton.

The gathering was made up of people from different walks of life. For some, it was obvious that this was their first time at the Sheraton. They stood around in awe and wonder. The guests did not mingle during the cocktail. One female guest was overheard commenting: “Can you imagine being here at the Sheraton? Who ever thought that I would ever come here?”

At around 8:00pm, guests sat down to a sumptuous three-course meal washed down with either white or red wine depending on the couple’s preference.

Guests were fed chicken luwombo, potato cakes, saffron rice, plantain, Nile perch, goat mchomo and much more.

Entertainment came in form of salsa dancers, Halima Namakula, Menton Kruno and new entrant, Rachael Kiwanuka, Halima’s daughter. The MC, Radio One’s Ken Love, spiced up the evening with humour and getting guests to participate in feeding each other chocolate.

On the fashion front, it was clear that Mr. Alain Young, the Caltex country director, is a romantic man. He was one of the two men who wore red. His was a red shirt toned down by a dark tie, black blazer and trousers. Another man wore red waterproof trousers teamed with black shirt and red jacket. This is the same man who carried along the photograph of his absent wife to romance with!
Most of the ladies wore red and black although a few opted for white and other colours.

In his opening speech, the country director commended the 70 couples for supporting Caltex. He promised guests an evening to remember with lots of entertainment including kimansulo much to the shock and delight of some guests. Well, the kimansulo did not come and he opened the dance with his wife at 10:00pm.
