ABRAHAM Wogute spurred Uganda to two victories in the men’s and mixed doubles of the Kenya International badminton championship that ended on Saturday.
In the men's doubles, Wogute, 33, an accountant with JR Consultants in Kampala, teaming up with Edwin Ekiring, lifted the crown when they eclipsed Kenya’s duo of Himesh Patel and Patrick Ruto 21-8, 21-15 in the final.
Wogute was at it again in the mixed doubles when together with Rita Namusisi, they demolished Zambia’s Olga Siamupangilia and Navid Kara of Kenya 2-0 (21-18, 21-14.
Ekiring, 21, put up a splendid show before falling 16-21, 17-21 to world number 32, Richard Vaughan, 28, of Wales.
It was a thriller-a-minute encounter as Ekiring produced his best. In both sets, Ekiring had led and tied 16-16 before the Welsh snatched victories.
“Lack of more international meets cost the Ugandan victory. With only five months since I returned to action after two years, I have featured in 11 events, including US, New Zealand and Austratlian open,” Vaughan said after the game.
The Welsh was ranked seventh in the world before illness locked him out of action. He won the Australian open last week and reached the semis and quarters in the US and New Zealand tournaments.
“Ekiring (right) is a great player for his age and with time he will stun the world,” he said, adding that it was a sigh of relief when his opponent cracked in the last stages.
It was Ekiring's last major tournament as he prepares to leave to Germany for an Olympic scholarship at the end of the month.
