NOT all that glitters is gold. This is the message in the play Kiwajja, which Bakayimbira Dramactors will stage at Pride Theatre.
The play will be a celebration of the late Prof. Rose Mbowa’s contribution to theatre in Uganda and the world over. Kiwajja is a woman who acts before thinking and ends up in trouble. The play has a message for all women.
Mbowa and theatre, in the words of the group director, Benon Kibuuka, were two in one. “Many popular performers passed through her hands,†Kibuuka said.
Her students included Charles Ssenkubuge, Matovu Jr., Rebecca Namakula (all of Bakayimbira). Others are Abbey Mukiibi, Abu Kawenja, Mariam Ndagire and Ashraf Ssemwogerere.
You need to see these people in action to know the magnitude of Mbowa’s contribution.
So, together with Gayaza High School and Gayaza Junior School, Bakayimbira will be commemorating the rich life of a woman who made and left a mark not only on theatre and women, but the academic field as well.
The play will be showing at the National Theatre on Thursday, February 10.
