Animal Farm is a timeless masterpiece!

SIR — George Orwell’s Animal Farm is an unforgettable book because of its timelessness. Orwell brilliantly captures the human psyche ruled by greed, intolerance, ego and hypocrisy.

It does not matter that Orwell was writing in Europe so many years ago. The past leaders then are like the present ones today in spite of their eternally condescending rhetoric. Man’s race, creed or geographical home is irrelevant.

Human beings are all the same! Man’s base nature has a tendency of unfailingly recycling itself.

Today in Uganda we are not short of Napoleons or Squealers and what is more, Snowball is always to blame! Look around and put names to characters on Uganda’s political scene.

If you don’t have Animal Farm on your shelf, please look it up and read it once again. Take particular interest in the animals’ new constitution after they had overthrown Jones and what happened later on and note how the novel ends.

One might be persuaded to think Orwell was writing about Uganda! If I had my way, Animal Farm would be a course book for all political science undergraduates in Uganda.
