SIR— Nkonge Bossa wrote a letter in response to mine in which he argued that NSSF contribution is for pension and retirement.
I wrote that letter after experiencing so many problems which would have been solved for many orphans had their surviving mothers/fathers had access to their NSSF contribution while they were still strong to make good use of their money. It should be remembered that a good amount of money is usually spent treating the first spouse to die of AIDS, and leaves debts. It is not fair at all to beg when you have something kept for the rainy day.
What can you tell orphans who cannot continue with their education because they have failed to raise fees? How about those who sleep in uncompleted houses which their parents left behind, bitten by mosquitoes every night?
There is need for a policy to help those who are afflicted with AIDS. It is a new phenomenon in society which should be treated as such. Rigidity will only harm society.
