On a chilly night in the green gardens of Acholi Inn in the heart of Gulu last Friday, we converged to celebrate peace, not total peace, but a piece of peace that northern Uganda is enjoying after 18 years of insurgency by rebel leader Joseph Kony.

The struggle has been long and hard and someone deserves a pat on the back for their contribution to the peace process.

On that day, Rwot David Onen Acana II, the paramount chief of Acholi, hosted a dinner in honour of all major players in the pacification of northern Uganda, as part of peace week celebrations, which began on Tuesday.

“I’d like us to reflect on our different roles in the restoration of peace in northern Uganda,” he said as he handed out wooden plaque awards to different organisations, including the media, UPDF, religious leaders and the donors.

It was a brief, but a well-attended event with high profile dignitaries including Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, Bishop Joseph Odama and rtd Bishop Macleod Baker Ochola, ministers Betty Aketch, Henry Oryem, international musicians Roselyn Otim (pictured) and Flora Oryema, MPs and district officials.
